Sheela na Gig enamel pin

hard enamel pin 25mm

A mischievous figure with vulva spread open wide, carved in stone, high up on a church wall, or at the boundry of a farm. Is she there to keep evil spirits away or perhaps she’s inviting us in?

I love this mysterious symbol, most commonly found in Ireland, There is little scholarly agreement on exactly why these enigmatic grotesques are found on churches, castles and other buildings across Europe. Dating mostly from the 12th Century, they have been attributed to goddess movements, pagan worship, fertility figures and warnings against lust.

She seemed to encapulste something about what I want this journey of the pin club to be - an invitation into meaning making. The gaping vulva may have struck terror into young obelates determined to live in holy celibacy, or been the focus of celebration after a fertile spring. All we know is that she was significant to many communities once and, like all symbols, she maybe has something to say to us today.

Sheela na gig smiles and draws your attention. She is in her power, whether to give a warning or an invitation, she is not ashamed of it. Where will she take you in 2024?

Do you need her protection?
Do you need a totem for bringing new things into being this year?
Or is it your own reproductive system and cycles that come to mind?
Is she asking you inside? What will you discover there?
